With countless passes and trails open to off-roaders, the area surrounding Salida & Monarch is ideal for ATV and four-wheel drive enthusiasts. Located in the Arkansas River Valley, the area is bounded by three mountain ranges - the Sawatch Range to the northwest, the Sangre de Cristo Range to the south, and the Mosquito Range to the north. The combination of flat and rocky surfaces offers trails and roads for riders of any skill level. And, with more than 300 days of sunshine a year, the region has earned the nickname "The Banana Belt." The mild climate allows for off-roading and other outdoor sports almost year-round.

Nearby towns offer plenty to do besides four-wheeling, too. Poncha Springs has 99 hot springs to relax in after a long day of hitting the trails. Rafting outfitters along the Arkansas River can give vacationers a taste of whitewater. And, a few miles to the east, Salida and Buena Vista have historic shops, lodging and restaurants.
